A Bainbridge Island Retreat Channels the Seventies, Reimagined
On the shores of Bainbridge Island, a waterfront home built in the 1970s called for a renovation that would honor its origins without becoming a period piece.
The brief was clear: capture the spirit of the era, not a caricature of it.
The material story begins with walnut — deep, warm, and unapologetically of-the-moment once again. It anchors custom cabinetry in the kitchen and a sculptural freestanding vanity in the guest bath.
Curved corners soften the architecture’s edges. Slatted wood paneling nods to the mid-century screens of the home’s original era, reinterpreted with a lighter, more contemporary hand. Sculptural pulls replace anything predictable — a small but telling detail that signals restraint over nostalgia.
A handmade mosaic backsplash and considered lighting set the tone. A recurring palette of mint green and inky teal threads the rooms together, colors pulled from the decade being referenced, filtered through a modern sensibility.
In the primary bath, a floating white oak vanity, an organically curved soaking tub, and a mix of tile textures keep the mid-century thread alive.
The result is a home that remembers where it came from — without ever feeling stuck there.
