ABOUT

At KAD, we practice Delight-Driven Design—an approach that balances intuition with intention, heart with mind, and function with beauty and personal expression. We blend classic design principles with a spirited, modern sensibility, bringing personality and soul to every project. Every space we create begins with a deep understanding of who you are, how you live, and how you want to feel. Our environments shape us in subtle and profound ways, fostering creativity, sparking inspiration, and enhancing well-being. Every detail is considered; your spaces should feel entirely authentic and unmistakably yours.

Our projects range from intimate residential corners to full-scale home remodels, as well as thoughtfully curated retail and dining environments. Regardless of scale, each project is guided by curiosity, collaboration, and discovery. We work closely with clients to translate personality, passions, and lifestyle into interiors that are refined, purposeful, and unexpectedly engaging. The result: spaces that are functionally smart, visually compelling, and emotionally resonant—designed to enchant. Our goal is simple: to create interiors that leave you charmed and utterly smitten.

This is Delight-Driven Design.

Kristin Alvarado

Principal Designer + Global Tycoon

I delight in delight, as a matter of fact I can’t live without it. In everything we do here at KAD, we are looking to surprise and delight our clients. I truly believe that our environments can make our lives better. When we surround ourselves with things that light us up, inspire us, support us, spark and energize us or calm and soothe us, we are in the best possible frame of mind to be our very best selves, to live our very best lives. Interior design is much more than creating functional spaces although it must be built on that. Interior design can be a radical act of self care, a lavish and generous gift of love that we give to ourselves, our families and anyone we invite into our spaces. Beauty is practical because beauty is inspirational. When we are inspired, we are our best.

I grew up living in Canada, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. In junior high, we settled in Annapolis Maryland until college, solidifying an east coast way of thinking-straightforward, truth-y. The experience of living internationally, learning other languages and fully integrating into other cultures is what made me. It has given me a comfort and craving for the out-of-the-ordinary. It is the foundation of how I think and how I design.

Perhaps because of this, I have always loved old houses and the way our homes tell our stories. My grandparents lived all over the world, my grandfather an army colonel, my grandmother–his Icelandic war bride, their home, and subsequently my parents home, were and is full of lovely, interesting things from everywhere they’ve been. A brass mongol from Turkey as a side table–an enormous, heavy, dark wood, carved dining table and chairs with stretched leather seats made for them in Venezuela, oil paintings from Iceland, bone china with seagulls from Denmark which now fill my own china cabinet. I want this for every client project–a sense of story, a sense of wonder, a home filled with personal, intriguing, beautiful things. Things that are uniquely “us”.

Kristin holds a B.F.A. in Interior Planning and Design, with minors in Architecture and Art, and has been creating carefully crafted joyful spaces for happy clients since 1994. Before founding Kristin Alvarado Design, she honed her expertise with local interiors firms developing a sharp eye for detail, function, and personal expression. Today, Kristin’s client-centered approach brings decades of experience and a passionate commitment to blending beauty, charm, and unexpected delight into every project, ensuring each beautifully curated space feels unmistakably personal.

Christy Penney

Empress of Interiors, Ruler of Renderings aka Senior Designer & Kristin’s conjoined design twin

My whole life has led me to this career.  I relish the opportunity to combine an artistic eye with a craftsperson’s tactile sensibility to create spaces which tell their own unique stories.  My experiences designing and running a fine dining restaurant in a century-old farmhouse, building my own home with reclaimed and sustainable materials, and working as a theatrical prop and scenic artist, have all synergized to make me a designer who possesses both a material knowledge of the nuts-and-bolts of a building, as well as an intuitive sense for the abstract language of colors, materials and shapes.

After realizing that my life’s experiences were leading me to Interior Design, I attended the Heritage School of Interior Design, receiving my Masters Certificate. I am energized by projects which provide opportunities for surprise and delight, rooms which authentically express the people who inhabit them, and the moment when a design sparks to life, blossoming into the truest expression of its potential.  All the better if it means I can employ some mid century lighting, evocative art, or something excitingly unexpected.

Outside of the studio I can be found hunting for vintage treasures, tending my homestead garden, volunteering in my community, and enjoying life with my husband and son in Kingston.

Mary Laurie

Procurement Czar + Product Whisperer

At KAD, I serve as our Procurement Czar and Product Whisperer, managing every facet of product sourcing and logistics—from gathering samples and coordinating trade accounts to overseeing orders, vendor timelines, and final inspections. My 34-year career as a Lead Business System Analyst for a major health insurer sharpened the attention to detail that now supports my work behind the scenes at KAD. Though I’m not a designer, I’m drawn to modern, mid-century–inspired design, rooted in timeless form and thoughtful function. What delights me most in my role is the joyful connection with our clients, especially when a carefully sourced piece sparks their excitement. Outside of work I find the most delight in my amazing family and friends, and, of course, a good game of Pickleball!
